In the heart of Queensland Parliament there’s a little-known oasis – an Edible Garden that not only boasts an array of seasonal produce but also serves as a supplier for our fine dining experience in Strangers’ Restaurant. From garden to plate, this garden contributes fresh, homegrown ingredients to elevate the Parliament’s culinary offerings across our event spaces.

Botanical History

Steeped in tradition and influenced by a rich botanical history, Parliament House’s Gardens serve as a testament to the enduring legacy of notable figures who played pivotal roles in shaping both parliamentary procedures and the lush greenery surrounding Queensland’s legislative hub.

The Clerk

In the mid-19th century, Lewis Adolphus Bernays, the inaugural Clerk of the Legislative Assembly, undertook the task of establishing parliamentary procedures from 1860 until his passing in 1908. His keen interest in botany is said to have left an indelible mark on the gardens surrounding Parliament House. Today, Bernays is commemorated through sculptured portraits and the naming of the Bernays Room, a lasting tribute to his contributions.

The Curator

J.F. Bailey, Curator of the Botanic Gardens and a distinguished botanist, also left an enduring impact. Responsible for the planting of palm trees along the George Street frontage, Bailey’s botanical skills have added to the lush greenery of the precinct.

Our Edible Garden stands as a living homage to all those who have worked and served here. This oasis not only reflects the dedication of those who laid the foundation but also symbolises the ongoing commitment of Queensland Parliament to sustainability and the farm-to-table ethos.
